As we watch the tornadoes and floods across the Southern US, sometimes it feels like taking small steps is just not going to be enough to stem the worst of global warming. But taking small steps is a start, and while these alone may not make enough of a difference in themselves, changing your attitude in your everyday life can lead to bigger realizations. For example, when you stop using plastic water bottles, or soft drink bottles, you begin to think, Maybe there are other things I really don’t need, things that are minor but have a huge impact when we consume them thoughtlessly. And maybe we will begin to think more about exactly what’s in those bottles – sugary drinks unhealthy for humans, especially in large quantities.

So, we’re going to post, each week, three things you can do. Just three. Take the whole week to add them into your daily or weekly schedule. Make just these three things habits for a week. Then, in the next week, add three more. Incrementally, you may be making big changes, just a little at a time. And pick and choose from the things you can implement, and leave behind those that you can’t, or that just won’t work for you, or for your family if you are a family member. Some things you may already be doing, so just give yourself a pat on the back for that.

Tomorrow, we’ll post the first three. If you don’t want to miss any, subscribe to our RSS feed, so you don’t miss any of these.

On this blog, we’re going to start posting weekly ideas for simple ways to reduce your CO2 output – easy to do for just about anyone, and if you subscribe, you’ll get them sent right to your inbox. The idea is that if you add one new habit every week or even just once a month, by the end of the year you’ll have made painless changes to your lifestyle that have a big impact on reducing your impact on global warming and your CO2 emissions footprint. Some are familiar, but some are new, I’ll have some really creative ideas on this list in the coming weeks.

Just to get you started, here’s an easy way to save electricity: Turn off your lights when you leave the house, go to bed, leave a room, leave your office at work for more than a half hour. Turn off your ocmputer monitor, plasma TV, excess electronics, phone charger – just go around and take a look at everything that’s plugged in, and unplug it, or shut it off. Do that every day for a week and see if you don’t lower your power use.

There are plenty of simple ways to incorporate alternative energy into your lifestyle. Some small examples are solar deck rail lights, solar powered attic fans, and other similar products now available on the market. You can find many, many other options to start to reduce your use of fossil-fuel generated electricity.

Post you best idea here too – combining our efforts is the key to making small changes into big ones!
